Zadar: Croatia's Perfect Road Trip Stopover

Zadar: Croatia's Perfect Road Trip Stopover

Pozdrav iz Zadra!

This small, charming walled city offers big personality without the crowds or prices of Dubrovnik or Split. Zadar was the perfect stopover during our Croatian road trip — just under four hours from Rovinj and another 90 minutes to Trogir/Split.

View of the Land Gate

Since it's busy with day trippers, spending a night allows you to enjoy it without the crowds. Zadar would also make an ideal base if you're planning to explore Plitvice Lakes National Park or Kornati National Park. Sadly, we didn't have time for either, but I still enjoyed our two days here.

What Makes Zadar Special

The Sea Organ | Creates haunting, ethereal sounds as waves crash beneath. There is also a swimming spot nearby.

Courtyard of the Five Wells

The Sun Salutation | This light installation dazzles at sunset. Hard to describe but very cool.

Land Gate | This used to be the main entrance to the city and really gives you a feeling for how well protected the city must have been back in the day.

Five Wells | Exactly what it sounds like. These wells once supplied the entire town with water.

Bastion Walls | Walk along the top of the city walls for bird's-eye views of the city and Adriatic. Unfortunately closed for construction during our visit, but the Ponton Bastion remains Dalmatia's largest, so !

City Markets | I love a good European market. Fresh everything and bustling with locals.

Where to Drink

The gardens of Queen Jelena Madijevke at Ledana

Deja Brew | Female-owned craft brewery with excellent local beers. This cozy spot in Old Town fills up fast, so if you see a table, you better grab it.

Ledana | Nestled in the beautiful gardens on Queen Jelena Madijevke, this place has a bit of an odd vibe, and the drinks were mediocre, BUT the scenery makes up for it so def check it out.

Wine Bar | Nice courtyard bar, playing “F**k the Police” by NWA, but the menus were sticky so we headed back to Deja Brew.

Where To Eat

Kastell | Punches above its weight. It’s a bit tucked away but worth the wander for their excellent cuttlefish risotto and sea bream.

Bruschetta | A local favorite with waterfront seating. The seafood platter and pesto shrimp were pretty good, but it’s the ambiance and location that make this place worth a visit.

THE LOGISTICS

Travel Date | June 2020

Accommodations | We stayed in a charming little Airbnb in a great location; very close to pedestrian bridge into town. The building was worse for wear but the actual apartment was modern and comfortable.

Transportation | Rental Car

Pro Tips |

  • Definitely bring small bills - these local spots don't appreciate being "bankrupted" by large notes
